1. GNWL (General Waiting List) — The Gold Standard
Issued when traveling from the origin station of the train to its terminating destination. GNWL tickets have primary priority whenever:
- Any confirmed passenger along the full journey cancels their booking.
- Unutilized Headquarter (HQ) or Emergency quotas are released at first chart preparation.
2. PQWL (Pooled Quota) — The Trap to Avoid
Pooled Quota is shared across multiple smaller intermediate stations. Because Indian Railways prioritizes long-distance passengers who pay higher fares, the pooled quota receives a very limited allocation of berths (often only 4 to 12 berths per coach). If you hold PQWL 15+, chances of clearing are slim.
Booking Strategy: Converting PQWL into GNWL
If IRCTC displays PQWL from your intended boarding station, verify if tickets are available under GNWL from the originating station to your destination. You can book from the origin station and simply select your local stop as the Boarding Point, securing GNWL priority while boarding at your convenient station.
