How Indian Railways Records Train Locations
Two primary data logging methods function across the 68,000+ route kilometers of the Indian Railways network:
- 1. Manual Station Logging (Legacy): At wayside stations, passing trains are recorded manually by the station master into the Control Office Application (COA) / NTES system. During busy switching or signaling operations, logging entries can lag by 15 to 30 minutes.
- 2. RTIS (Real-Time Train Information System): Over 8,000 locomotives are equipped with ISRO-developed satellite transceivers that transmit speed and coordinates to GSAT satellites at 30-second intervals.
Primary Causes of Inaccurate Status Displays
1. Loop Line Halts and Overtakes
When a train is diverted onto a loop line to allow higher-priority services (such as Rajdhani or Vande Bharat expresses) to overtake, it technically arrives within station territory. However, if platform departure is not yet entered, commercial apps freeze the position at the previous halt.
2. Cached Third-Party Feeds
Many commercial travel apps cache train status requests for 5 to 10 minutes to minimize server bandwidth. By the time the app screen refreshes, the train may have traversed several additional kilometers down the track.
3. Bypass Tracks and New Chord Lines
When routes are redirected over newly constructed chord lines that bypass congested junction stations, legacy timetable software still expects check-ins at the junction, registering apparent delays until the train reaches the next major signaling point.
How RailTrack Improves Status Accuracy
Instead of relying on a single delayed feed, RailTrack uses multi-source telemetry verification:
- Direct integration with official CRIS NTES data.
- Passive cell-tower antenna identification onboard the coach.
- Coordinate matching against OpenRailwayMap physical track geometry.
This approach verifies whether a train is waiting at an outer signal or operating at line speed, presenting an accurate reflection of progress on the ground.
